Before the First Application
Good preparation includes knowing when a general guide is not enough. Start here, then check the exact instructions for every product in your system.
What should I practise first?
Start with a small premade appliance on a practice form. Learn dry fitting, compatible paint layers and removal before a complex application on a performer. Our prosthetics guide explains the construction order.
Is silicone always better than foam latex?
No. Silicone can offer translucency, while foam latex is light and compressible. Suitability depends on design, movement, budget, sensitivities and the product system. A material’s reputation is less useful than a relevant movement test.
Can I substitute a household glue?
No. Use an adhesive intended for the specific skin application and compatible with the appliance, with its specified remover ready. “Non-toxic” on a craft label does not establish suitability for skin attachment.
What if I have a latex sensitivity?
Avoid latex-containing products and consult a qualified healthcare professional about your individual situation. Check every product’s ingredients; a different appliance does not establish that the entire system is latex-free.
Does a small product test guarantee safety?
No. Follow the manufacturer’s testing guidance, but understand that a test cannot rule out all later reactions. Stop if irritation or discomfort occurs. Persistent or significant symptoms need appropriate medical advice, not another makeup layer.
Can I blend every prosthetic edge with solvent?
No. Edge treatment depends on the exact material and encapsulation. Use only the specified method and follow handling and ventilation instructions. An unknown solvent can damage the appliance or create an avoidable exposure risk.
Why does my colour match change on camera?
Lighting, exposure, white balance, surface sheen and display settings can all affect the match. Compare the face and appliance under controlled conditions and the intended scene setup. See the colour-testing process before adding more pigment.
How should I remove an attached appliance?
Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s directions using the specified skin-safe remover. Allow the bond to release gradually and do not pull a firmly attached piece free. Protect sensitive areas and follow the remover’s precautions.
What belongs in a continuity record?
Record appliance identity, placement, compatible product names, layer order, labelled mixtures, approved images, lighting context and wear observations. Protect performer images and obtain permission. A photograph alone does not explain the application.
Can these guides teach lifecasting or eye-area effects?
No. Lifecasting, eye-area applications, cosmetic contact lenses and dental appliances require specialist training and appropriate professional guidance. Do not improvise these procedures from a general online article.
